I love music becauase its so expressive and a good exuse to move your body about in whatever... way you please. My musical taste are pretty varied but i want to spend the rest of my life with rock, possibly marry it. It takes me away to my own serene cave of happiness in a twisted sort of way, depending on the music. I love to write. I want to be a writer but sometimes i wonder if i am close to being a semi-good writer. I may never know because it is hard to show people my writing. I belive it is difficult for me because i'm afaraid of rejection. If someone rejected my writting they would be rejecting a part of me. My writting is like my eyeballs they both are a part of me and without them i would be...well... different . Expertise: Skiing, food, dance, Raising my hand in class. I usually let my hand flop about above my head but sometimes i raise my hand and semi-point my pointer finger. | Jaclyn Hewell English Pre-IB I Windows May 10,2007
“Come in! Come in!” he sobbed. ”Cathy do come in. Oh do once more! Oh my heart’s darling! Hear me this time, Catherine; this time.”(p.26 Bronte) Through out the novel “Wuthering Heights” the literary theme known as windows prevails by representing the separation between Heathcliffe and Catherine, the set division between other characters and the homes, and windows as the supernatural element.
In the beginning of the novel, the reader is exposed to Mr. Lockwood, who introduces the windows theme to elaborate on the windows that are significant as a separation between Heathecliffe and Catherine. Mr. Lockwood is trapped at Wuthering heights because of a snowstorm. He has no choice but to remain for the night. Zillah, the housekeeper leads him up to Catherine’s old bedroom. He isn’t aware of this till later, nor does he realize the negative effects it will produce. Mr.Lockwood reads some of Catherine’s old diaries, but he begins to doze. Then comes the eerie knocking form the window. At first he believes it is a branch but when he opens the windows he is grasped by white cold fingers. Despite his fear, he is able to ask the female who she is. According to the Emily Bronte novel the ghost of Catherine says: ”It is twenty years, I’ve been a waif twenty years.” This proves that Catherine has always longed to be at Wuthering in living and at death. Shortly after this, Heathecliffe comes in and flees to the window. He begs, his love, Catherine to come back to the window. After Catherine marries Edgar Linton her and heathecliffe live a divided life. When Mr. Lockwood is in the room she is trying to get into Wuthering heights, as she has tried throughout the novel. Heathecliffe also longs to be with Catherine, which is obvious when he has his grieving episode at the window. One representation of the windows is that of a solid division barrier, between Heathecliffe and Catherine.
One day when Heathcliffe and Catherine go frolicking on the moor, they arrive at the Thruscross grange window. Through this window they spy Edgar Linton and Isabella Linton, though rich, both looking very sullen. Edgar and Isabella see and the dog is let loose. Unfortunately, the dog tears up Catherine’s leg, forcing her to stay at the grange for several weeks. On one side of the window were Thruscross grange’s finery and the brats with in. On the other side of the window is the outside with Catherine and heathecliffe. This moment in the story defines the places the characters should be and who they should be with. Catherine and heathecliffe do not belong as Thruscross Grange. Heathecliffe would not be accepted at thruscross grange and therefore Catherine would be unhappy without him. They belong outside the Grange together at Wuthering heights. This is true for Edgar and Isabella as well. Edgar and Isabella should remain together at the Grange. Once the character cross the window to the other side, it disrupts the characters lives’ dramatically. For example, throughout the duration of Catherine Earnshaw’s marriage to Edgar Linton, she longs to be with heathecliffe. Obviously, she is unhappy because she should no be at thruscross grange. When Isabella marries hethecliffe she moves to Wuthering heights, where she does not belong. She is also very unhappy because the height’s household mistreats her. The window represents a set division as to where and whom the characters should be with. Once this set division is changed or disrupted the Character’s life becomes chaotic, confusing, and never quite fulfilled.
The supernatural element is also incorporated into the theme of windows. In the beginning of the novel, the ghost of Catherine knocks on the window of the room Lockwood is staying in. Instead of the tapping being from a branch it is actually Catherine’s cold fingers. The supernatural element helped elaborate eon the haunting of the characters. Catherine is always trying to come in, even in death. Hethecliffe is looking out for Catherine. Even though Catherine is deceased both characters use the window as a middle ground or meeting place. In the end of the novel heathecliffe dies, but his spirit goes through the same window out to Catherine. Wuthering Heights is a dreary novel so the ending if it could no be sad had to be supernatural or unbelievable. In this part of the story the window let them to be together by allowing heathecliffe to go out the window.
Whether Emily Bronte intended for windows to be a prevailing theme with in the novel, no one knows. Wuthering heights forced Literary Scholars to study the windows theme, because it is so occurrent in the novel. She obviously had some significant thoughts, longings, or events that occurred in her life at windows. With her masterful skill she was able to use windows to represent the separation between Catherine and Heathecliffe, the set division between other characters and locations, and the supernatural element.

| Jaclyn Hewell 4th period Global warming has become an increasing problem over the years especially with the world's rapid growth in population. Oh sure you'll be dead in another 70 years or so, so why should you care if the earth burns up because the o-zone layer has been completely depleated, right? The world’s population is increasing and thus the demand for fueling sources increases as well. Petroleum is one of those fueling sources that are constantly in demand especially in developed countries such as the United States, a number one contributor to green house gasses. Not only are fossil fuels detrimental to our environment but they are not easily accessible for many reasons; the millions of years it takes for them to form and the fact that oil is held hostage over in the middle east, being the main reasons. A new method of fueling for motor vehicle has been discovered; Ethanol. Ethanol is produced most popularly from corn products as well as other grains and wastes. Every vehicle is able to run on about 10% volume of ethanol Many car manufactures such as GM are coming out with vehicle modules that can run on higher percentages of ethanol. If the United States switches to a mostly Ethanol based fueled vehicle society it would save the environment, econmically improve farmers of the United States, and make the United States independent via fueling sources. | | |
| Jaclyn Hewell 4th period Global warming has become an increasing problem over the years especially with the world's rapid growth in population. Due to population growth, the demand for resources and industrious goods has skyrocketed The effects of carbon emissons from the resources an industries has had a significant part in the rise of global warming. The Kyoto Protocol is one of the most effective regulations to reduce the amount of carbon emmsissons in the environment. The only problem is the U.S is not officially a part of the list of countries involved in the worldwide regulation. The carbon emmisons from petroleum refineries and from cars in the developed world is the largest percentage of greenhouse gasses. New methods of ethanol products have come out the most plausible being corn as an alternative fueling source for motor vehicles.Global warming will soon take a turn for the worse, if we don't do something to protect our environment. | | |
